Just Curious...

I love baking. I inherited this from my mom. She is an amazing baker. Anyway, today I was baking some chocolate chip cookies (yum!) and heard my mom's voice in my head as Simms said "Yum! Cookies!" and grabbed a fingerful of dough on his way out to soccer practice.

Do you know what my mom was saying to me? Don't eat that - it's not good for you! Then why does it taste so yummy and have such a tremendous temptation? So not fair. In my youth I confess that I wrongfully ate my fair share of chocolate chip cookie dough. Then as an adult I resisted knowing that it wasn't just that uncooked flour isn't good for me but the risk of Salmonella from raw eggs is real. I certainly wouldn't expose my child to this on purpose. How then could I tell Jeter and Barber that they aren't allowed to have any cookie dough while I indulge and risk my life? I determined I couldn't and therefore wouldn't. Simms wasn't happy. Years have passed and you know what? It's come to this - Simms sneaking a fingerful of risky yumminess while the boys are in the other room and me not saying a word.

So fess up ladies (and men)...do you live dangerously and indulge in the tastiness of cookie dough before the cookies are baked?

I do, when the kids aren't looking. And sometimes I let them have a tiny taste the butter/sugar mixture before the eggs go in.

But I did not when I was pregnant or nursing. And if there's any question concerning the quality of the eggs, I skip it.

Yes, I eat the cookie dough and let my kids eat it too. And as they eat it I always think this could be the one time that it all goes wrong.

Pregnant not pregnant, kids all of us eat cookie dough more than we eat the cookies. I also ask the Lord to protect us and then dive in.:)

Yup, we do. All of us. I figure we all did it for years growing up and none of us suffered too much. To me, it's one of the simple joys of baking and being a kid with my kids.

My fave: oatmeal chocolate chip dough - with rolled oats not quick oats. Sticks to your ribs :)

I do and Princess is the best taste tester of them all. She was just sampling the pancake batter this morning.

In college, the student union sold frozen cookie dough as a snack. Between that and their yummy mozzarella sticks, we were in heaven!

On the other hand, Michael wouldn't touch something that gooey for a hundred dollars. :)

My son has egg allergies so I replace the egg with 1/4 cup of vanilla yogurt. The cookies still taste great and I can eat the cookie dough with no worries!! Holly

I don't bake a lot of cookies, but when I do, I don't think that I do eat it...not that much anyway. And Brady has never had the idea of trying it...yet!

Definitely eat it!! It is one of the great joys of a mom baking cookies. Some of our neighbor kids fearfully wouldn't have any at first (and I just told them to do whatever their mom wanted or to run ask her). But they now all take a spoonful too. We all love it. I've read that the risk of salmonella poisoning from eggs is very slim and almost all (or was it all?) cases occurs in eggs purchased at restaurants (where, I assume, the eggs have been left out at room temperature too long). I'm guessing that the risk of e. coli poisoning from eating turkey or ham sandwich meat which hasn't been heated is much greater--and I definitely don't heat each slice before giving it to my kids.
