The kids were invited to a birthday party this weekend for "Firecracker" as her mom, Southern Belle (aka Rendy) calls her. Firecracker was turning 3 and wanted a Bug themed party because this house LOVES bugs. I wanted to share several great ideas from the party in case you're looking for some new birthday ideas.
For the first hour, the 8 invited kids simply played in the backyard. There were plastic bugs hidden in a sand box that they dug for and they loved playing at the water table and on the swing set. It was one of the most relaxing parties I've ever attended as all the kids were content playing for an hour.
Then Southern Belle rustled up the kids to play 2 games. The first game was sort of like a relay. Each kid got an Oreo cookie. They had to separate it, lick the frosting to make it sticky and then run up to this giant ladybug that was missing its spots, and stick the Oreos on it. Of course, the best part was watching the kids pick the Oreos off the ladybug and eating them. We wouldn't want to waste good Oreos that have the spit of other kids on them!
The second game taught them about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. One of the dads played the part of the caterpillar. The kids used toilet paper to make his cocoon. Then when he was all snug in his cocoon, we yelled 1-2-3 POP and he popped out of the cocoon as a butterfly and flew around the yard. Of course, then all the kids wanted to be wrapped in a cocoon and pop out as a butterfly.
While eating a simple lunch of hot dogs, applesauce and cheese sticks, Southern Belle read two books---bug related, of course.
And now I will shock and amaze you with my next item. The above bee and below ladybug are actually cheese balls!! Aren't they the cutest things you've ever seen. Cheese balls!! I couldn't bear even eating them they were so adorable. Southern Belle got them from the West Shore Farmer's Market at a stand called A Matter of Taste. (I hope that's the right name). Cheese balls that are a work of art!
The bug pictures the plate is sitting on are actually stickers that the kids wore, and some of them are actual pictures of hairy, scary bugs. They looked so real I got a little freaked out. And if you know Southern Belle, you'd think she'd be a little squeamish of bugs because, well, she's a Southern Belle. But, no, she was encouraging the kids to catch bugs in the back yard and then she would run over and help identify the cute critter. Believe it or not...bugs are her thing and she's passed that love along to Firecracker.
Then Southern Belle brought out this caterpillar cake and declared that she had made it herself. GET OUT! Is that not the most adorable thing you've ever seen??!! She then went on to tell us how easy it was to make. She lost me after step 2 but I'm sure she'd be happy to share the recipe with you.
Southern Belle takes no credit for her great party ideas. She said she simply Googled bug party birthday ideas and up came a slew of suggestions. Firecracker's and Southern Belle's love and enthusiasm for bugs was contagious at the party and even my girls walked away with a new appreciation and understanding of our multi-legged friends.
