Best-Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies

Nothing says welcome like a fresh batch of Chocolate Chip Cookies straight from the oven. Here's my favorite recipe that children and adults just can't resist.

2/3 c. shortening
2/3 c. softened butter
1 c. sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 t. vanilla
3 c. flour
1 t. soda
1 t. salt
1 c. chopped nuts (optional)
1 package (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips

Mix shortening, butter, eggs, sugars, and vanilla. Add other ingredients. (If you add an additional 1/2 c. flour, it will make a softer, thicker cookie.) Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes at 375 degrees or until light brown. Makes about 7 dozen cookies.

Yum! We make this same recipe. For a lower fat / no Trans-fat version that's still yummy, I sometimes replace the shortening with plain yogurt... and if I don't want the saturated fat either, I replace the butter with oil at the same time. Although they come out slightly different, you can't tell that you've cut the fat :)

(PS. I'm not even gonna look at that death by chocolate recipe... how dare you tempt your biggest-loser competitors????)
