Remembering the Reason for the Season

A few years ago, I was challenged by a speaker at a Moms In Action meeting to use Advent as a way to keep our family focused on the real meaning of Christmas.

She explained how for over two decades she has chosen a theme for the month and then had daily object lessons with the kids. Some of her past themes have been 24 Names of Jesus, 24 Miracle Births in the Bible, 24 Friends of Jesus and 24 Things Jesus left when he came to earth from heaven.

This year we are doing the Alphabet as the foundation for Advent. Day 1 was the letter "A". We read the verse "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) and then talked about why that verse is the reason God sent his son to earth.

I hide this card in our Advent Box and then the kids open the box at dinner. Junior says the letter, Sparkle reads the verse on back and Brown Sugar hands out the activity. Then we tie the cards to our banister to remind us all month of what we've learned.

We also talked about Angels and then the kids colored an angel picture (printed off computer) that we're going to send to each of the great-grandparents. Easy peasy.

If you are celebrating Advent this year or have in year's past, please link up your ideas so we can

That's a great idea, Nat! I'll have to remember that for another year since we already started our "reality show" Advent project! Our previous Advent studies have given us a lot of happy memories and a firmer foundation in Christ.
