Automatic Trouble

I thought my kids were the only ones who freaked out about automatic toilets but this article in the NY Times proves that it's pretty much a national epidemic. The worst is when it flushes spontaneously.

The kids make me put my hand over the red eye until they have gone, wiped, and are out the door...then I can let the toilet flush. Now I see I can buy a doobop to do the same thing.

Flush-Stopper, a reusable piece of plastic with putty on the back that can be placed on the toilet’s electric eye, blocking the sensor. The device comes with a resealable bag, for sanitary storage. Mr. Kay estimated that he had sold more than 110,000 of the devices, which cost $2.99.

Pretty neat if you need it! Squiggly-Wiggly doesn't seem to be too bothered by the auto-flushers, but my friend's son was. I'll keep this in mind if Fuzzy-Wuzzy needs it.

I absolutely HATE those toilets! Here's why...
I had just started training Girly Girl. She was doing great and I thought we were close to being totally trained. Then, we decided to go to Red Robin. She had to go and while she was sitting on the toilet, it flushed not once, not twice, but three times. No clue why. I think it knew we were close to success!
That was the end of training for girly girl for a long time. She still, to this day hates going to the bathroom in Red Robin.

If they would have had those sensor cover thingys when I was training, I would have invested.

I feel your pain. Two of my four hated (still hate?) those things. They would scream and cry and beg me not to let them get sucked into the pipes, never to see Daddy again. As years have progressed, I often wonder if the big brother in the house planted some ideas trying to be funny. It was downright embarrassing to have two toddlers climbing my leg in fear every time we entered and exited a public restroom. Not that they had that far to climb, but climb they did!

I agree, automatic flush stoppers are horrible for toilet training children. I just ordered a flush-stopper at http://www.flush-stopper.com. Worth a try for less than 3 bucks.
