5 Facts I Didn't Know About Breast Cancer

October is breast cancer awareness month. Here are a few things I've been learning about this cancer:
  1. 3 out of 4 cases of breast cancer are in women with no known risk factors.
  2. Pennsylvania has the 5th highest rate of breast cancer incidence in the U.S. with more than 188,000 women in PA living with the disease.
  3. When breast cancer is detected in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate is 98%.
  4. 25% of women with breast cancer are younger than 50.
  5. Even if your mammogram was normal you should still perform a self-breast exam every month. Mammorgraphy is only one screening tool.
